Believers and the Electoral Process PDF Print E-mail

Governments pass laws. Laws can work either for or against the plan and purpose of God in any land. Laws can promote, encourage or hinder righteousness in a nation. And righteousness exalts a nation, says the Scripture.

America is an example of the above. Abortion and homosexuality are among the evils now supported by laws. Prayers are prevented from public schools and laws have been passed in many States to allow same sex marriages.

These are the effects of governments. The Scripture, therefore, instructs believers to pray for governments and those in authority and gives the reason – that we (the believers) may live a quiet and peaceable life. Doesn’t that imply that governments can make decisions that could affect our peace as believers?

In a democratic society such as ours (Trinidad and Tobago) believers are allowed to participate in an electoral process that determines the government that comes into power? In the light of  the foregoing:

  • How serious should believers take the electoral process?
  • What should be believers reasons for voting?
  • Could believers be guilty of contributing to the electing of a government that would in turn work against the plan of God?
  • Do you think that the electoral process is something the devil would also be interested in? Give reasons for your answer.
  • Should believers vote for the same reasons as the unbelievers?
  • Should believers adopt the approach that God is in charge and their vote would not make a difference?

Contact us! Let us know your views. Your answers would be considered and form part of a booklet to be written on the same subject.
